This corner of numerology has become very popular. People change phone numbers, pay premiums for particular vehicle registrations, and pick shop names by digit. The calculation is simple, and this article covers it, along with an honest note on where its usefulness ends.
Reducing a phone number
Add every digit of the ten-digit number, then keep reducing until a single digit remains. For 98213 47650 the sum is 9 + 8 + 2 + 1 + 3 + 4 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 0 = 45, and then 4 + 5 = 9. The number of that phone is 9.
The same method applies to landlines, shop numbers and vehicle registrations. For vehicles only the digits are added and the letters are dropped. Some traditions convert letters to their alphabet positions too, but the common practice uses digits alone.

Matching against your own life path number
Reading the number in isolation is only half the exercise. What gets checked is whether it agrees with your life path number, which comes from the day of birth: born on the 18th, 1 + 8 = 9, so the life path is 9.
The general rule is that a number whose planet is friendly to your own is considered suitable. Sun, Moon, Mars and Jupiter form one friendly group; Mercury, Venus and Saturn form another. Sun with Saturn, and Moon with Rahu, are not traditionally treated as comfortable pairings.
A word in defence of the number 8
Many people avoid 8 because it belongs to Saturn. That is not really fair. Saturn brings delay, but it also brings permanence. For long-horizon businesses, property and financial work, 8 is considered favourable. People whose life path is 8 or 4 usually find it comfortable.
What gets checked for a vehicle number
- Reduce the digits of the registration to a single digit.
- Check whether that digit agrees with your life path number.
- Many people avoid 4 and 8. As above, that is a generalisation, and the conclusion is not sound without checking the life path.
- For vehicles, 1, 3, 5 and 6 are generally described as suiting movement and comfort.
- If a particular number carries a large premium, it is worth asking whether the spend is proportionate.
Where to stop
Numerology supports a birth chart reading; it does not replace one. Its conclusions can contradict the chart, and in that case the chart carries more weight. Changing a number does not change the direction of a life, and no significant decision should rest on a digit alone.
The practical advice is straightforward. If you are taking a new number and you have a choice, pick a favourable digit. There is no harm in it. But changing a number that every one of your contacts and accounts is attached to is not something numerology alone justifies.
