Gemstone rules: five checks before you spend the money

Gemstones are the part of astrology where the most money changes hands and the fewest questions get asked. Someone says you should wear a blue sapphire, and the next day you are at a shop. This article is about the five checks that belong before the purchase.

Start with what a gemstone actually does

A gemstone amplifies a planet. It does not change it. That single sentence is the key to the whole subject. If the planet rules a favourable house in your chart, amplifying it helps. If the same planet rules your 6th, 8th or 12th house, amplifying it also amplifies that house.

This is why the same stone produces different results for two people, and why gemstone advice given without reading the chart is a gamble.

Check one: which house does the planet rule?

This is the most important question and the least asked. Put it to your astrologer directly: which houses does this planet rule in my chart, and which house does it sit in? If the answer includes the 6th, 8th or 12th, stop and get a second opinion.

Check two: weak is not the same as malefic

Strengthening a weak but benefic planet is useful. Strengthening a malefic one works against you. Conflating the two is the commonest error in the field. Weak means the planet is on your side but needs support. Malefic means causing difficulty is its job, and reinforcing it means reinforcing the difficulty.

Check three: weight and metal

Weight is traditionally set from body weight and the chart. The usual ranges quoted are ruby 3 to 6 carat, pearl 4 to 8, red coral 5 to 9, emerald 3 to 6, yellow sapphire 4 to 7, blue sapphire 3 to 5, hessonite 5 to 8, cat's eye 5 to 8, and diamond half a carat to one and a half.

The metal follows the planet too: yellow sapphire and ruby in gold, pearl and blue sapphire in silver or panchdhatu, red coral in copper or gold. The stone is meant to touch the skin, so have the ring made with an open back.

Check four: certificate and quality

  • Ask for a certificate from a recognised laboratory stating the stone, its weight, origin and any treatment.
  • Ask specifically whether the stone is natural or lab-grown. The price difference is very large.
  • Look for cracks, milkiness and internal flaws. A flawed stone is traditionally considered unsuitable for astrological wear.
  • Take a proper invoice and get the return terms in writing.
  • Be wary of a steep discount. Genuine stones are not cheap.

Check five: the trial period

This is prescribed specifically for blue sapphire, hessonite and cat's eye. They are worn on trial for a few days before being adopted permanently. If sleep worsens, the mind stays unsettled, or health dips during that window, the stone comes off. Tradition treats this as a clear signal.

Gemstones are not medicine. Never substitute a stone for medical treatment. If you are unwell, see a doctor first. An astrologer who advises you to stop taking prescribed medication is giving advice you should not follow.

When to choose the substitute

A substitute carries the same planetary association but is considered slower acting, so it is worn in a larger weight. If your budget is tight, a certified substitute is a better buy than an uncertified primary stone. That is ordinary common sense and the tradition accepts it.

How to wear it

  1. Wear it on the planet's day, in the morning, at an auspicious time.
  2. Cleanse the ring in raw milk and clean water.
  3. Chant the mantra of the planet 108 times.
  4. Put it on the prescribed finger and check that the stone touches skin.
  5. Pay attention to how the first month feels, particularly sleep and mood.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can anyone wear any gemstone?

No. A stone amplifies its planet, so which house that planet rules in your chart decides whether it helps. Stones for lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th are generally avoided.

What precautions apply to blue sapphire?

It amplifies Saturn and is considered fast acting. A trial period of a few days before adopting it permanently is treated as essential.

How is the weight of a stone decided?

From the wearer's body weight and the condition of the planet in the chart. General ranges are quoted, but the final call is the astrologer's.

What is the difference between a primary stone and a substitute?

A substitute is a cheaper stone associated with the same planet. It is considered slower acting, so it is worn in a larger weight.

Can a gemstone cure illness?

No. Gemstones are not medicine and cannot replace treatment. For any illness, a doctor comes first.
