Kaal Sarp Dosh Puja in Ujjain: Mahakaleshwar, the ritual, timings and cautions

Two places in India are best known for Kaal Sarp Dosh remediation: Trimbakeshwar near Nashik, and Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Tradition treats Trimbakeshwar as the principal site for this particular puja, but Ujjain has a specific claim of its own, and it is worth understanding.

This article covers the practical side: where the ritual happens, what the sequence actually involves, how long it takes, which day to pick, and most importantly how to tell when you are being overcharged.

Why Ujjain

Ujjain is bound up with the idea of time. Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and the name itself means lord of time. In the Indian astronomical tradition the prime meridian was taken to pass through Ujjain, making it the city from which time was measured. Kaal Sarp Dosh is, at bottom, a name for an obstruction of time, so choosing the seat of the lord of time is treated as fitting.

The second reason is logistical. The Shipra river, Mahakaleshwar, Mangalnath and Kal Bhairav all sit within a few kilometres of each other. Puja, abhishek and the closing immersion can all be completed in a single day, which saves both time and travel compared with Trimbakeshwar.

Nagchandreshwar: open one day a year

On the topmost floor of the Mahakaleshwar complex sits the Shri Nagchandreshwar temple, and it opens for exactly one day each year, on Nag Panchami. The doors are opened after the midnight Trikaal puja and darshan continues for the next twenty four hours. After that they close and do not open again until the following Nag Panchami.

Inside, Shiva and Parvati are seated on the bed of a ten-hooded serpent king, with Ganesha alongside them. It is held to be the only temple where Shiva is depicted seated on a serpent bed. That is precisely why the day carries so much weight for people who believe they are affected by Kaal Sarp Dosh, and why the crowds are what they are.

Nag Panchami falls on the fifth day of the bright half of Shravan, which usually lands in July or August. In 2026 it was Monday 17 August. Check the panchang for next year, because the date moves. If you are planning darshan on that day, book accommodation weeks ahead and expect to queue through the night.

Note that Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran puja is performed all year round. Darshan at Nagchandreshwar is unique to that one day, but you do not need to wait for it in order to have the puja done.

Where the ritual takes place

PlaceRole
Mahakaleshwar JyotirlingaRudrabhishek and the main sankalp. The Bhasma Aarti needs separate permission and advance booking.
Nagchandreshwar templeOn the top floor above Mahakaleshwar. Darshan on Nag Panchami only.
Mangalnath templeThe mythological birthplace of Mars per the Skanda and Matsya Puranas. Mangal Dosha puja happens here, and many priests suggest pairing it with Kaal Sarp.
Kal Bhairav templeBhairav puja, traditionally added to work involving Rahu.
Shipra ghats, Ram GhatBathing, sankalp, and the closing immersion of the serpent images and havan material.
SiddhavatAssociated with ancestral rites, added in some traditions.

In practice the puja is usually conducted at a place the priest arranges, near the Shipra ghats or in the puja halls just outside the temple complex, with visits to the temple and the ghat for the abhishek and the immersion. Do not expect the whole ritual to happen inside the sanctum, particularly on busy days.

The ritual, in sequence

  1. Bathing and sankalp. After bathing in the Shipra, the person states their name, gotra and purpose.
  2. Ganesh pujan and punyahavachan, with which any Vedic rite begins.
  3. Navagraha pujan, with particular attention to Rahu and Ketu, since the yoga is formed by their axis.
  4. Rudra Kalash pujan and the installation of the nag and nagin images, usually in silver or another metal.
  5. Recitation of the Rahu and Ketu mantras. This is the part that stretches or shortens the whole ritual.
  6. Havan, balipradan and purnahuti.
  7. Rudrabhishek at Mahakaleshwar. Many priests treat this as the sealing of the remedy, on the reasoning that Shiva wears serpents as ornaments.
  8. Immersion in the Shipra. The serpent images, the havan ash and the remaining material are released at the designated ghat.

How long it takes

It depends on how much recitation is included and which additional pujas are attached.

RitualUsual duration
Kaal Sarp Dosh Nivaran aloneAbout one and a half to three hours
With Rahu and Ketu jaapAbout three to four hours
Laghu RudrabhishekAbout an hour, the Rudram recited eleven times
Maha RudrabhishekTwo to three hours, the Rudram recited one hundred and twenty one times
With Mangal Dosha pujaHalf a day, since it means travelling to Mangalnath

For comparison, the same puja at Trimbakeshwar generally runs three to six hours, because the sequence there is somewhat more elaborate. No classical source claims one location is more effective than the other.

Which day to choose

  • Nag Panchami is considered the most auspicious, and is also by far the most crowded.
  • Panchami tithi in any month is generally treated as suitable for serpent worship.
  • Any Monday in Shravan, for Shiva worship.
  • Amavasya, particularly for work connected with Rahu.
  • If avoiding crowds matters more to you, pick an ordinary week outside Shravan and the Simhastha period. The ritual itself does not change.

One practical check before you fix a date: ask your priest to confirm that Bhadra and Rahu kaal do not fall across the puja window. That single question saves a lot of inconvenience.

What to bring

  • Date of birth, accurate time of birth and place of birth. These go into the sankalp.
  • A copy of the birth chart if you have one.
  • Photo identification, which some bookings and temple entries ask for.
  • Ritual materials are usually part of what the priest arranges, but ask in advance what is included and what you need to bring.
  • Simple traditional clothing. Some temples restrict stitched garments, so check whether a dhoti or saree is required.

How to avoid being overcharged

This is the most useful section of the article, so read it properly. Inflated pricing in the name of Kaal Sarp Dosh happens at both Ujjain and Trimbakeshwar, and fear is the reason it works.

  1. Get the fee in writing, in advance, itemised: dakshina, materials, the number of priests, and the abhishek listed separately.
  2. Ask how many priests will sit and how long the recitation will run. Most of the price is decided by those two numbers.
  3. Do not book through touts at the station, the bus stand or outside the temple. Deal with the priest directly or through a reference you trust.
  4. If anyone tells you progress in life is impossible without the puja, or pressures you to pay immediately, stop there. Nothing in the tradition is sold on fear.
  5. If a very expensive special ritual is proposed, get a second opinion. Standard Kaal Sarp Nivaran is an ordinary rite, not a rare procedure.
  6. Ask for a receipt. Reputable priests have no problem with this.

We do not book pujas, we have no commercial arrangement with any priest, and nothing on this page is an advertisement. This information exists so that you arrive prepared and pay a fair price.

Check this before you travel

One thing is worth confirming before you go to Ujjain at all: whether your chart actually forms Kaal Sarp Yoga. It forms only when all seven remaining planets fall on one side of the Rahu to Ketu axis with none on the other. If even one planet lies outside the axis, the yoga does not form, and this is exactly what a hurried calculation gets wrong.

Beyond that, what gets examined is whether Jupiter casts a benefic aspect on Rahu or Ketu, and whether your running dasha is Rahu or Ketu at all. If a different planet is running, the practical effect of the yoga stays limited. Put that question to your astrologer directly.

The short of it

A trip to Ujjain is a calming experience in its own right, and darshan at Mahakaleshwar carries meaning independent of any dosha. If you are going for the puja, arrive prepared, settle the fee first, and keep in mind that Rahu and Ketu signify ambition and detachment. Plenty of people with this configuration have reached unusual heights in their field. The discouragement the word "dosha" produces usually does more damage than the planetary positions do.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Kaal Sarp Dosh puja take in Ujjain?

The Nivaran puja alone runs about one and a half to three hours. Adding the Rahu and Ketu jaap takes it to three or four hours, and adding Mangal Dosha puja makes it roughly half a day.

When does the Nagchandreshwar temple open?

One day a year, on Nag Panchami. The doors open after the midnight Trikaal puja and darshan runs for twenty four hours, after which they stay shut until the next Nag Panchami.

Ujjain or Trimbakeshwar for Kaal Sarp puja?

Tradition treats Trimbakeshwar as the principal site, though Ujjain is widely used too. Ujjain has the advantage that Mahakaleshwar, Mangalnath, Kal Bhairav and the Shipra ghats are close together, so everything finishes in one day. No classical source ranks one above the other.

Do I need my birth chart for the puja?

Date, accurate time and place of birth are needed, because they go into the sankalp. A copy of the chart makes it easier for the priest but is not essential.

What does Kaal Sarp puja cost in Ujjain?

It varies a great deal, depending on the number of priests, how long the recitation runs, the materials, and any additional pujas. We do not quote a figure because doing so would be misleading. The right approach is to agree an itemised fee in writing before you travel, and not to book through touts.

Does it have to be done on Nag Panchami?

No. Darshan at Nagchandreshwar is unique to that day, but the Nivaran puja is performed all year. Panchami tithi, Mondays in Shravan and Amavasya are also considered suitable.
